cedar advise please

Cheers

Recommended Posts

I am building a removable skirt around my hot tub out of cedar 1x6 x3/4thick t&g .It will be 8 feet long and 20 inches high . I plan on attaching the cedar boards on to 1x4 strips and making a solid panel. I will screw the 1x4 strips to the back of the cedar , 1 strip on the top and one on the bottom . I was thinking of using gorilla glue in addition to the screws for added strength and to reduce any flex . My concern is that the glue may prevent the wood from shrinking or expanding with the humidity and cause the wood to split.I plan on putting a finish such as vairathain on the wood . The tub is inside at room temp and humidity all year .

Any thoughts or advise would be appreciated

Normally you'd blind nail at the tongue.

Of coarse to hide the nail and allow the wood to move.

Generally you would never do as you propose. Will it split, maybe.

Would I admit I've done it and it worked out fine maybe. smile

Acclimate the wood first.

If you blind nailed twice at each furring (spaced 2" apart on 1x4) I don't think the panel will twist or rack on you but once its in place it wouldn't matter if it did.

Or lay out the T&G face down, lay the strips on and screw 1" from the edge of the tongue and in the center of the 1x4.

Pre-drill, because the screw is more likely to split.
