shamalex72
Anyone with a sportboat? I am buying one, what size motor are you running? I was thinking of a 4 hp johnson with the weedless gear case, but not sure if it would be big enough. Any thoughts?
Feathers Rainin
We run the old school 3 hp weedless evinrudes and Johnson's and they move pretty good. 4hp would be fine. I've seen 6-8 on em ad they zip but they are pretty stern heavy and probably not as safe.
shamalex72
That's what I will be looking for, the older Johnson/evinrude.
ncesi
We used to run into Basswood out of Ely and we ran a Johnson 15 hp. with a hydrofin on the boat. Man that thing would fly. I think the newer boats are 8 hp. rated the older ones were 6 hp. This is one excellent boat.
candiru
I have an older one from the 70's I believe it is rated for 5hp.
Black Bear
I prefer not to use a outboard with a hose tank. I have 2 older 3 HP air cooled (for duck hunting) johnsons and a newer water cooled 3.3 hp Johnson.
MNHunter65
I have an old 3hp Johnson on mine. I can take it up river without issue. I do keep an extra gallon can of gas with me just in case.

shamalex72
I got the boat today, its a 1975 rated for 5hp. I like the idea of not having the hose and tank, so I will probably look for the 3hp which has the internal tank.
Jack Asche
The 3hp with weedless lower unit is pretty sweet, and vintage. Love my Evinrude Ducktwin, but dislike the lack of a neutral gear.Often run a 4hp Suzuki with internal gas tank.Love the Johnson 8hp for speed but the external tank is a trade off.I lean toward speed if running long distance, or internal tank for short jaunts. Would absolutely love to get my hands on a 15hp!
