JimW
thinking of getting one of these for ice fishing. When I went to purchase I noticed in the specs it says the size is: 5.8 x 3.8 x 7.2 inchesIs that the size of the Tpod? I use a 6" hole so it seems it would not fit. Anyone use one and know the size of the tpod part?thanksJim
Lawrence Luoma
You're right you have to have an 8 inch hole. As for how well it works for ice fishing I would only say it works only ok. I love it for setting tip up lines but for ice fishing as a whole it doesn't replace the flasher.
Brad B
Jim, The Sonar Phone was designed for open water use. it can be used on the ice but the results would not be the optimum performance from the unit. if money is a issue there is some lower end summer time graphs that you can add a ice fishing transducer to. I can't remember the exact models right now but I think they were lowrance units. you can get the humminbird units but the cost of them once you add the ice fishing transducer is near what the cost of a actual flasher would be. I guess it would depend on if you want to be able to use the unit year round.
JimW
Price is somewhat a factor. I just don't want to spend $300 + dollars on an ice fishing flasher. But I don't want to spend $129 on something that doesn't work either. I thought I read favorable reviews from ice fisherman on this site last year. I like this model as it is wireless and can be used in summer shore fishing.
Brad B
the only thing you might run into with this unit if you use it during the ice season is that you might get interference or feed back off the side of the ice hole once it gets really thick. one option to over come this would be to get the portable model of this with the suction cup attachment then figure out a way to mount the transducer to something and lower it to the bottom of the ice hole. you can get kits to use regular flashers during the summer time too if you want to make it so you can use it year round. maybe doing this you could justify the cost of the flasher. I have my boat set up to run my Vexilar FL-22 during the summer and it works great when vertically jigging in deeper water.
