first timer on the red river

We are heading up to the red channel cat fishing this weekend and looking for any advise or info. I fish the Monticello St cloud area for cats but never been up to the red and would like to come as prepared as possible. I run a 18 foot Jon with a prop guard set up for the river to get around in. Any advise would help

What launch are you using? Bring some suckers to use for cut bait. Also bring a spinning set up to catch gold eyes. Check out the USGS gage nearest your launch. Shouldn't have to worry about wood, but it depends on the stretch.

A good depth finder helps. Subtle changes, small holes. Try shallow, try deep. Figure them out, then fish them hard. Do some daytime and nighttime.

Good luck!

b123. Dude, I really hate to discourage you man, but we had a huge violent storm role thru here last night, and the river is gonna be rising fast, and a muddy mess for at least the next week or two.

I'd rather see you switch gears now, and not commit to a trip that just fails this weekend.

I'm really sorry to crush your plans, but it's all but a guarantee fishing the Red River of the North will be near impossible for a while now. You should prolly re-schedule to later this fall. Sorry buddy.
