Diagnostic test for injectors??

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 f250 7.3 Diesel, 152,000 miles.

Runs fine, I have never replaced any of the injectors.

Is there a diagnostic tool that will let me know if any of the injectors need to be replaced or do I need to take it apart and look at them while running??

Thx,

Mike

I agree. We used to replace injectors on our diesels at set intervals to try to head off problems.

It didnt work that way for us. We quit doing it because we had more trouble with the rebuilt ones than if we left them alone and replaced them with new ones as needed. The original new ones were also lasting far longer than we expected them to.

Cold engine, do an injector electrical buzz test, if all injectors are nice and loud, and there are no codes, dont touch it. If there are quiet injectors, replace them. It will buzz all 8 injectors first, then it will buz 1-8 one at a time, the 1-8 should all sound the same. Quiet ones are bad.

Its been a while since I have look at a 7.3 but if memory serves me right I don't think you can buzz the injectors like you can on a 6.0L, you have to use a injector interrupter tool, basically a button box that has 8 buttons, press the button and it disables the injector. Injectors on a 7.3L don't go bad.

On 7.3L its usually the valve cover gasket wire harness and connector that connects to the valve cover gasket burn up due to faulty glow plugs, or a shorted wire under the valve cover.

In some instances a 7.3L will over rev (manual transmission down shift) or run away(?) and break rocker pivots, that was "interesting" diagnostic.

Final though, if a 7.3L runs well and co check engine light, let her buck.

The 7.3 does do a buzz test, but it does not do a cylinder balance test.
