Ufatz
Young family member has 2001 Toyota Solara convertible. At 40-50 shakes pretty bad. You can feel gentle shake at 20mph. New tires new bushings tires balanced and re-balanced. Toyota dealer says the usual "Gee...never heard of that before" But Toyota owner Boards has many reports. Have not seen a solution. Sorta long shot but any of you guys ever run into this or has anybody heard of it? I told kid to dump car after I drove it. It DOES seem to have a shimmy at ANY speed. Otherwise very nice little car.Oh!...car has not been wrecked, has had two or three alignments and several tire re-balance sessions.
scrotec
axel out of balance, drum or rotor out of balance, bent wheel, young newbee balancing the tires, just some ideas.
minky
Yep, sounds like something is bent or out of balance.Any updates?
Ufatz
Trip to a different 'tire" place resulted in 90% improvement. I did a test drive for the kid and I now think front struts are next on the list.....but no hurry. It is a VERY nice and well put together little car. Sorta reminds me of the SL series of MB in some ways, but of course it is front wheel drive and I have never much cared for that. Had it on some Audis and an old classic Caddy and just wasn't my cup of tea.But.....all is much better now and the nice new set of Michelins will not get all ripped to shreds by poor alignment/balance.In today's world you really gotta watch who does what to your car. Or boat. Or bike, or washing machine.

My inlaws and such shake thier head at me and my disdain for fwd ,,they are not exactly "car guys"
