Lake Minnetonka Carp

Craigums

Recommended Posts

I plan on fishing Tonka a decent amount this coming summer and if the bass are not cooperating or I bring someone that doesn't fish all that much I'd like to try catching some carp. Does anyone have any pointers on techniques or locations that they would be willing to share?

You can swim 2-3in jigs that look like bugs along the bottom too. Carp feed down. There eyes look down and there mouth is on the bottom of there head.

As a role of thumb, dark bottom dark jig skirt. Sandy bottom sandy colored jig. Drag on the bottom or tick bottom to stir up the bottom a little. I have had luck with dragging mimic minnows. Just use a one size heavier jig to stay on or near the bottom. They will pounce and pin it to the bottom on hookups.

Calverts where runoff inters the lake especially after heavy rains, they will be looking for night crawlers and such that are washed down the drains. In spring Carp will be in the same areas as Bass.

Dog days of August you can find them working shallow sandy area. If the water is clear you can sight fish for them.

Corn is the go to carp bait. I used to throw in a hand full of corn and drop my corn baited hook in with them. The state of Mn now frowns upon this.

There are a lot of good videos on YouTube on carp fishing. Check um out.
