Keeping ice hole open over night?

I have been using carpet over my tipup holes for years. It's cheap and works much better than the foam circles you buy from the store. If temps are above zero the hole will stay relatively ice free, sometimes just a crust, even over night. I just make sure the hole is perfectly clean before I go to sleep. Even below zero and in high wind this works. The holes will shrink in before the top freezes sometimes.

The carpet should be 2' square and cut a slot to the middle. Slide between tipup frame and spinner and close any gaps with snow. Clearing the snow to the ice around the hole helps too.

I'll bite, sure.

But i'm curious why we would need a permanent, if this is about keeping holes outside from freezing up.

Anyway, shoot me a message.

Most people are concerned about keeping their holes open so they do not have to re-drill.

My thing would work for the out door tip up as well.
