crappie55409
I have never fished upper red and i am excited to go this year and see what all the fuss is about. I am wanting to take off this weekend and make a drive up there as i hear the fish are biting and they have 8+ inches of good ice. I have two questions that im hoping to get answers to: 1) is there a night bite on upper red? Im going to be fishing mainly walleye and, being that i have a limited amount of time this weekend to fish i would want to know if im looking at having just sunlight as fishable hours or if there is a night bite too. 2) Ill be fishing out of a portable due to ice thickness but i have an ice castle near by that i could pull out to the lake and sleep in. My question is is there a place, i.e. resort, land plot, parking lot... that i can park my fish house at as a homebase and sleep in at night instead of renting a room somewhere? Maybe a place where you get charged like 10$ a day or something? Thanks for any input and ill let you all know how we do if we end of going up
Stcloudangler
There is a night bite, and as far as your other question if you posted this in the red lake forum you would get better answers.

Chad Holst
Night bite, day bite, afternoon bite... Yes, Yes, Yes.Place to park your ice castle to sleep in, yes, but if your willing to spend $10 a night to park it, and then the extra money in gas, why not just rent one of the empty fish houses on shore and sleep there. It wont be more than $10 a night PLUS the extra gas you save. (im assuming you would be driving a bit, if you want to sleep over...so there is extra gas involved)Still cant figure out why weekenders sleep at all when they go to red...there are fish to be caught! Agronomist_at_IA
It's Upper Red Lake...........it's the only lake that I've fished where catching walleyes gets old. I've been on that lake where the bite at night has turned 100+ walleyes out. If i remember correctly a clear sky and sunny day or clear night and full moon really produce the best. If it's possible and the ice is thick enough I'd put the ice castle buy shore and fish at night outta it. Right now, I believe tree huggers. are doing fine catching walleye. How's the size of walleye up there? Are we starting to see more large walleye in that 26-30in range?

But thats just me I dont know much yeah i was just looking at the weather reports and those temps in a portable all day and night doesnt sound like too much fun for a 36 hour window of fishing...not to mention dont know how much the fish will be biting in those conditions.Might wait a week
