How late in the year can I lay new sod. I am building a new house that was supposed to be done over a month ago and they still have a few weeks ti go. No lawn yet and I am worried it is getting too late. I have 2 dogs so a lawn is a necessity. Ill post back with who the builder is when I am finally in to warn everyone else how horrible they have been.

You can lay it up to when it is darn near fozen and snowing. It then, however, can become more of an issue of how thick it can be cut, or if the final grading can done acceptably. Also sometimes late in the year the site can not dry out enough and will be a permamush.... then when laying it will have footprint divets everywhere and pull apart the seams when walking on. You do run the risk of winter burn without any snow cover, but in general would be more concerned about site more than the sod. Contractor being a putz aside, best advise is not to push it to get done if some of the previously mention things are an issue.

you can lay sod up anytime like said.

I was in the same situation as you were years ago and it ended up not getting done til Spring. I had the builder throw some sod down almost to act as a rug and we put a bunch of straw down to to take care of the dog issues. It was a hassle but better than nothing. In the Spring they cleaned it all up and layed new sod everywhere.
