Moving Firewood

Recommended Posts

I recently moved from Shoreview to Forest Lake. I have a pile of cut firewood in Shoreview that has been sitting 1 year I'd like to take with me. Yesterday I noticed there were bugs, grubs, ect in the bark. Also when I split a few pieces there is gray discoloration in the wood.

Think I'm ok moving this without transporting anything?

If it's hardwood then it is illegal for you to move the firewood. Shoreview, as with many other Twin Cities suburbs is under a quarantine. The DNR has lots of information here: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/firewood/index.html

This specifically discusses the restrictions and has a link showing a map of the quarantined areas: http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/firewood/firewood_MDABrochure.pdf

$7500 fine if you're caught. You could buy a lot of firewood for $7500

Yes, since you are already in Hennepin / Ramsey county, you cannot move the wood outside of those counties. However, put an ad online and sell it. You just cannot cross the county line.

I could be wayyyyy off base here but I was under the understanding that as long as its within the same county you'd be OK. BUT don't take my word for it.
I don't specifically know whether you can or can't do this. However, when I think about it from a logical perspective I can't think of a reason to move firewood in an infected/quarantined area. Your lot may be infected but five miles away in the same county it's clean. Why take the chance?

Straight from the horses mouth....

Thank you for contacting the Minnesota Department of Agriculture with your firewood question.

As you may be aware, Hennepin, Ramsey, Houston and Winona Counties are quarantined for the emerald ash borer. All ash wood and hardwood (non-coniferous species) firewood are regulated and cannot leave the quarantined counties. You are permitted to deliver wood into the quarantined counties (Hennepin and Ramsey), as long as you drop off all wood within those counties before you leave them. Once untreated firewood enters the quarantine it cannot leave the quarantine.

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.
