Riding Areas

Dave

Recommended Posts

I'd like some reports on trail conditions from you guys. Also, reports on how riders are behaving out there.

A friend of mine went to Spider Lake last weekend. Riders were behaving well and he said it was the most machines he's ever seen there. Maybe it's cause of the publicity the area received in the Star paper and many riders didn't know of such an area.

I haven't rode yet but my Mille Lacs area (east side) hunting land has a lot of standing water on it.

We went up riding this past weekend. We rode up and around the soo line trail area. All riders we saw were staying on the trails, so that is good. It sure looked as if everyone was having fun.

Sorry to butt in on your thread Dave, glad to see you're taking a proactive role in monitoring other riders -- if everyone had been doing this fom the beginning, we probably wouldn't have the mess we do now. If you see somebody fishing Spider Lake this weekend, stop by and say hi --it will likely be me. I'll post my "objective" report next week wink.gif Spike

It has been good going up around URL. This spring has been cool but dry leaving the roads/trails in good shape.
The riders appear to be making sure they do not cause any trouble. I have not heard any complaints.
For those people that want to play in mud again this year I will be letting people ride out in a rice paddy that is out of production for this summer. They want mud they got it on private land. smile.gif

Just got a note from the SCDR ATV club I belong to saying that due to Blue Earth county zoning ordinances, the gravel pit which they had been using would be off limits to them. I don't ride that much recreationally but log lotsa miles riding fields. Looking at bugs & weeds in fields gets kinda boring after awhile. Since there isn't a lot of time leftoverto travel up north, would be nice to have a decent trail here in this part of the state.

Great to be here Dave! Can we talk about sheep now? LOL! Seriously, Smokey the 250 Trail Blazer keeps on going. Lotsa rain over the past week or so has made for some wet conditions & gullies, especially over in the SE MN trail area. Was wet last week when we were there. Reports of 4" - 5" of rain this past Monday nite not uncommon.

Dotch,

I for one agree. There should be several more trails in SE MN. To have to crowd the Snake River trail system is just isane: to have to travel 4 hours up north to the nearest trail is outrageous.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
