05 Impala plenum bad ?

Recommended Posts

so today I pulled my throttle body on my 05 Impala with the 3.8 engine to clean it, when I went to remove the Throttle body a small amount of coolant came out there was a good amount of carbon build up but there was no coolant in the body looks as thought the coolant came out of the small holes located on the bottom, does this mean my upper plenum is Toast ? any info would be Great. Thanks

No, the coolant flows into or around the throttle body to help prevent freeze up in colder weather. The coolant you saw came out of the holes on the bottom of the opening that the throttle body gasket seals.

If the plenum ruptured it would have hydro locked the engine. There is no mistaking that this has happened.

Thanks for the reply! I took a picture of this when I removed it to show my mechanic he said that coolant is not supposed to be there and that those holes were for air passages. I have a app scheduled for the plenum repair next week he quoted the repair at 450.00. I guess I just saved myself some $ I can't believe he would tell me my plenum is bad just to nail me for 450.00 but I have questioned his trust before, I guess I need to find a New repair shop this town only has 5 of them! Do you know if the 2005 3.8 engine had plenum leaks ? or had they fixed this problem by 05 ?

By the way thank you! you just saved me 450.00
