2000 Chevy Malibu LS not starting

Recommended Posts

My daughter got her car last fall and about 3 months ago it did not start one afternoon. My wife went to check her car and bring her home. The car did not start,my wife noticed the gas gauge showed empty and the low gas light was on. They pushed the car off the incline it was on to level ground and it started[daughter got a lecture].Three days later the car did not start again.I went to get her and try to start her car.I got in on the passenger side and turned the key to listen for the fuel pump, the car started.I followed her home and told her to leave it running when we got there. The gas gauge showed empty and the low gas light was on and the anti- theft light was on also.I checked a few things and shut the car off and restarted it about 8 times. After shutting it off the first time the gas gauge showed the correct level and the lights were off. Two months later it happened again. We thought it was related to the anti-theft system, but after checking on that I am guessing that is not it,but not positive. We were told if the anti-theft system was at fault if when the car doesn't start turn the key to the on position the theft system light will flash for about 8 minutes and then stay on. Once the light is on and not flashing you should be able to start the car, this did not work the last time the car did not start. While my daughter was waiting for me to show up the dad of her friend whose house she was at came out to ask her about the car.He opened the passenger door and was asking her about the problem and she turned the key to show him and the car started.

I am confused as where to go from here.

Thanks workin'

I also had a Malibu which did the same thing off and on the whole time we owned it. nice that Chevy knew about this problem and tells you how to start car when this happens in the owners manual rather than fix the problem. I talked to several dealers and they cant bypass the theft device. I know I didn't like my daughter waiting somewhere for her car to start. sell it like I did or get used to it frown

Check for anti-theft codes in the BCM. If there are codes there than it should point you in the right direction. Personally I would slap a new lock cylinder with a new passlock sensor in it, do the relearn, and hopefully solve the issue.

If there are no anti-theft codes thank would have to wonder if the ignition switch is the problem?
