Boat steering

I have a 2000 Lund Explorer SS with a Yamaha 50 hp. The steering is getting very hard. My question is how do I find the correct steering kit for my boat? How do I know what type I need? Hope someone can help me on this issue. Thanks.

Often you can find the length and the manufactures part number stamped on the cable.

Otherwise you need to determine the style-rotary or rack. I'd guess rack.

Then you need to measure.

Center of helm to gunwale

Then from that point to transom

Then from that point to center of motor.

Keep in mind it's often necessary to lift the engine from the boat to gain clearance for the cable. I'm not completely certain on yours. You can always try to remove the old cable first to determine if lifting is needed. If you can remove the old one, there should be no need to lift to install new one.

how do i determine if it's rotary or rack. i was guessing rotary. i looked at it tonight and it says Teleflex Safe T Steering on it, under the steering wheel. thanks again.

If its a Safe T system them yes it's a rotary. If you now look down the cable, you might find the length stamped on it
