Waypoint organization, fishing GPS

Hookey

Question

Does anyone have any suggestions on keeping waypoints organized on your boats GPS ? I used to name my waypoints with species and date like 050613eyes seems to work ok but the Humminbird appears to date the waypoints so maybe there is a better way ? Just got a Humminbird and would like to start off on the right foot. Also are waypoints and tracking data recorded on the lake master ad card ? Obviously you can't copy the lake master card can you ?

Waypoints are on the machine, not the map chip. How many waypoints do you have and how big is the water you are fishing? I have great plenty waypoints stored from years of fishing many different lakes and I don't see a problem with just having a symbol marking "the spot". I might drop a pin in the middle of a big sand flat because that's where the fish are today. I will almost always delete these types of waypoints when I'm done for the day because they are all but useless in the future. Odds are that the fish in these types of locations likely won't be there for long. The waypoints I find valuable are the humps, bumps, gullies and other structure that don't show up on the map or would be difficult to find without the waypoint.

Lol...this is so true. I have some weird names on mine and when one figures it out, please let me know.

Last year i started naming way points after points, bays, reefs, or other popular landmarks so it makes it easier to search for them...if multiple spots on a reef....they get followed by a number.

You can always use icons as well. I like to use various signs to associate with structure. Fork/Spoon on mine indicate weedbeds. Simple to do and you don't have to rename them because you know what the icon was. Skull/Cross bones indicated luck at that spot
