LOTW Map Chip

Recommended Posts

I've been out of the technology game for a little while so I'm really not up on what's new. Recently purchased a 587ci HD DI Combo from Hummingbird and it's telling me that it's compatible with either Lake Master or Navionics map chips. I fish several times a year on LOTW and would really like a nice, detailed map for the GPS. What's the best chip out there for that application. I'm a little clueless... help/ advice/ opinions really appreciated.

Thanks

Dang Shorelunch, I appreciate the help but the site blocked what I assume was a link.?

Any way you could spell it out for me so I could check it out?

Thanks

Lakemaster Woods/Rainy is going to give you the most detail and more mapped structure for sure but only maps those 2 lakes. Navionics will work if your looking for more bang for your buck though. It has it mapped well enough to find the main structures and it will work for other lakes in the upper Midwest as well.

I haven't used Navionics on LOW. I understand that there are places where Nav works better than LM and vice versa. Are you saying that Navionics is missing structures on LOW?

I only have the phone app handy and it is not zooming in very far but enough to see 1' breaks.

A couple comparisons east of Arnesens- First is a rubble area NW of the harbor. Second is Cookers. The bigger reefs seem a little closer by comparison, but shallow water areas are much more detailed in the Lakemaster versions. LM data is right from the Woods/Rainy chip, Navionics is from the HD US Canada app on my iPad. I assume the Navionics data is the same as from their chip...

Wow, quite a bit of difference.

Of those that have used them on the lake, which is more accurate.

For example, Navionics looks like it shows more detail on ML but LM is more accurate. On ML, I have driven to inside turns shown by Navionics only to find they didn't really exist. This has lead me to only trust a chip after verification. It may look good on the screen but real life may be different.

In the second example above, LM shows four distinct humps worth checking out while Nav shows only two. Which one is really right? It would take someone with experience with both of these chips on this lake to tell us which one is correct.

LM is more correct as I have fished these spots, I have also found inaccuracies with LM on LOTW. To truly make a 100% accurate map they would have to spend a lot more time out there than they did. Lakemaster IMO did a better more complete job. On some of the smaller MN lakes I fish, the lakemaster chips are scary accurate. Will these subtle differences mean you will catch less fish, I doubt it...

Sorry . . . on the Canadian side of LOTW, I use the Lakemaster chip (Woods/Rainy). The newest version is 4.0, but unless you fish up by Kenora, I think you would be fine if found the version before that in the clearance bin - 3.8 I think.
