A Little Late

I know I'm late in the game as far as the lottery system goes for turkey hunting, but this spring I'd like to give it a go. There's just too much time in between Spring/fall when I can't be calling/shooting stuff where i can't handle it anymore. crazy So I'm asking some people who have been in the game for quite some time; I'm pretty sure I'll be heading to Wisconsin for hunting since you can get some over the counter? I'll be buying a mouth call today and starting to practice! Im sure my girlfriend will truly appreciate me calling 24/7 lol...Its nothing but duck/goose in the fall and now turkey in the spring! ANY help would be appreciated! Thanks!!

Shane...

Lots of left over tags available in WI. You'll have no problem picking one up. If you think you want to try down in the 94 corridoe of Western WI, look me up. I can run and gun with you and most likely put you up in an extra bedroom.

Good Luck!

Yep, leftover tags for zone 4 (Western WI) go on sale March 21st.

Don't practice that mouth call at home, your GF will toss you out in no time. Do it in the car when you're alone. Trust me on this.... eek

It's great that you want to learn a diaphram call, but believe me, it'll RARELY be enough. Birds respond to different calls differently at different times. You'll seriously want AT LEAST one slate (or aluminum or glass or acrylic or...) call and one box call you're comfortable with.

Even mouth calls, I buy several each spring and throw most of them away pretty quickly. There will be just a few that will work for you. (at least that's the way it is for me)

Thanks for the help guys. I figured a mouth call would be perfect for when I'm driving to and from places. Goose and duck calling is becoming less attractive in the household these days. I'm not sure how my parents put up with the hours I would practice my goose and duck calls when i was younger!

any suggestions on mouth call purring? ALso, does anyone use a game call to turkey call?

no like the flextone thunder cluck'n purr

i have seen some reviews that say those calls are easy to learn, so would be a good option for a beginner (no offense grin)

they are kind of a hybrid mouth/tube call and sound pretty good from the videos i have seen.

plan to check them out at an outdoors show this weekend.

Just picked up a few different brand name calls and the Knight and Hale fit me best. Not sure if I should try some different brands or go by the sayin, "if it aint broke don't fix it" term?!

We've been through tons of mouth calls over the years. A 2 reed with less tension on the stretch will be a little easier to get a good purr on, but my 9 year old prefers a regular Hook's Jr Pro 3. The biggest part of purring is the air control, and if you can get that gargling sound from your throat. If you can't you can flutter your lips but IMO your better off grabbing a pot call if that is the case.

A good high end box call is going to run you around $100-175 so just like duck calls the good ones are a pretty big investment.

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
