Rigging your yak

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Thought I'd open this up for discussion. It's winter/project season and I've been thinking a lot about how to better rig a kayak. The main approach seems to be loading it with everything (5 rod holders, crate+4 more rod holders, fish finders, anchors, outriggers, down riggers, rudders, more rod holders) and packing every lure/rod you can fit. The result is something that weighs 300lbs, paddles like a dock, and has really limited casting angles. Basically you make your fishing platform worse.

Was thinking Pareto concept (20% of stuff that yields 80% of the results). What can't you live without? Where do your problems arise when you add stuff? What actually makes you a more effective angler?

Love to hear it.

I personally would love to have a ton of rods with me on an outting but to cut down on clutter and improved casting angles I attached a 3 rod holder to my milk crate which sits behind my seat. I'll sometimes bring a 4th rod if I plan on throwing a lot of different presentations. A nice paddle I think makes a difference (I like my fiberglass BB paddle) and make sure you buy/make a paddle leash. I would recommend an anchor, I believe mine is 2.5lbs and folds up pretty small. It's nice to have if you're fishing structure or if the wind really picks up - I installed an anchor cleat behind my seat for an easy place to tie off a bait bucket, anchor, rope, drag chain, stringer, etc. I installed an anchor trolley on mine for cheap but honestly, I never use it. Lastly, I think a fish finder is a must - you don't even need anything fancy just something to tell you depth, water temp, and some insight into structure.

Thanks for the input.

Love the crate rod holder idea. How about camera mounting? I haven't committed to installing my fish finder in the actual hatch for it. I just strap it on top.

Also, how was install for the anchor? I've entertained the idea, but am holding off for the time being. In regards to anchor weight, what yaks are you paddling?

I carry a 6lb or a 3.5lb depending on where I'm going. If I'm fishing some of the local rivers, I tend to anchor in a swifter current (highly recommend anchor trolley) and so I'll use my 6lb. If I'm fishing Mississippi backwaters or a lake, I bring the 3.5 lber.

I see your pictures is an Ocean Kayak. What model? If it's the Trident model, it might be worth looking at the mod pod. They will accept all of the scotty mounts, without hole drilling being needed. If that's the case, you can kind of swap out the needed accessories as you go on each trip.

I haven't rigged my yak up for the summer yet, but I have an anchor trolly for each side of the yak. I was only going to use one, but when MN Fish Hunter suggested one on either side, it actually made a lot of sense with how much river drifting I plan on doing.

From what I've seen of MN Bass Fisher's rig, it's pretty slick...

I might have to go the 3.5 route.

I have the trident 13 w/ the mod pod. Love it to death. I do wish it came with the molded cup holder like the prowler trident 13 does though. I choose to leave off the accessories because I like the open space. Plus I spend so much time standing that if I lost my balance and dropped into the center I wouldn't have to worry about a scotty going where the sun doesn't shine.

Has anyone demo'd the scotty outriggers? I'm going to be spending a lot of time chasing muskies this year and the extra stability would be nice. Casting the mag dawgs standing up is like walking a tight rope....

No, but I've been tempted to give them a try. At $300 though, that's a pretty steep price. I'm still hoping to get myself a small boat by the summer though. If I do, the kayak will likely get sold. I don't intend on dropping much money into accessories for it until I know if I'm going to be keeping it around.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
