Boundary Waters BWCAW - Trip Route

I'm planning a cold water trip up to the Boundary waters in May, and need a little trip advice.

We are interested in targeting Lake Trout 1-2 Days, and Walleye 1-2 Days. If we get into anything else, I'm OK with that also.

I would like to know if anyone has any good suggestions for a 2-5 portage, THURSDAY-SUNDAY trip.

NEEDS / DETAILS

1. a good trout lake (I've never targeted Lake Trout before)

2. a good walleye lake

3. no specified area, willing to go out of any access

4. 3 men hauling 1 or 2 canoes

5. Light Packers (1 Duluth Pack, 1 tent, poles)

6. Prefer a loop-trip, rather than an up&down trip. But either will do.

7. I would Like to avoid the LARGE Lake Trout Lakes, but not necessary.

I have the list of the lakes that hold both Lake Trout & Walleye, so I shouldn't need your secret fishing hole. Just looking for a nice trip that I can hit both species relatively easy in late May.

Thanks for any info, or suggestions!!!

Go through the Round Lake access towards the end of the Gunflint, I think it's AP #50 or 51 or 52. There are a lot of good lake trout lakes in there, plenty of decent walleye lakes, and IMO good northern lakes as well. There are a number of routes that you can take in and out or doing loops through Bat and all of those small lakes. They are all easy portages with, I believe, only one that's a couple hundred rods. It's all good terrain, some of which was burned out a few years ago.

Any others have opinions to offer?

I'm debating between the East / West side of the Gun-flint Trail.

I feel that the East side hold more Trout Lakes. But I'm a walleye guy.

I'm sure we can find both relatively easy.

Any other route suggestions??
