Cell Phones in Canada

Heading up to Canada this summer. Assuming I can get a signal near Ear Falls (Lac Seul) do you pay a fee to use your phone? Text? I have ATT.

It's probably plan/carrier specific, but I'm gonna guess your phone will work just fine and you'll pay a fee for voice/text/data on some sort of international roaming rate. For me that's like a dime a minute for calls and something like 15 cents for texts. I have tmobile. The data rate is something ridiculous but if I'm in Canada I'm not streaming youtube videos or checking junk email.

I've always shut off mobile data and limited calls and txts to only what's necessary. Usually on a trip to canada I'm somewhere that doesn't get service anyway.

I did rack up a fair bill when i was in vancouver for a week.

i just looked at at&t's HSOforum and it looks like their charges are ridiculous. Unless I'm reading it wrong they want a buck a minute to talk on the phone and 50 cents to send a txt, 20 cents to receive...

Yikes. I'd check out on of the international packages that give you so many minutes they have available if you really got use that phone.

Roaming charges in Canada (and other countries as well) can be very expensive. Beware.

I've gotten data charges at something on the order of $20-25 per MB.
