River Hunting

Recommended Posts

I was curious does anyone know what the rules and regulations are for floating down a river duck hunting or where I could find this info? I have looked on the DNR HSOforum and I have not been able to locate any info. Also how does hunting from canoe with a dog work? How unstable would that be?

I float small rivers while duck hunting. I bought some stabilizers from spring creek primarily because all 3 of my daughters like to fish from the canoe, but they really work great for duck hunting. Do a seach for spring creek canoe and you should find them.

hey there, i do not know the regs for floating rivers, but i did float the mississippi from monticello to elk river once about 9 years ago. i thought it was fun, but the conservation officer and some fishermen who came over to make sure the CO knew exactly where i had shot my ducks really didn't like the idea of me doing it. and now that im a little more grown up, i can understand why.

if you call your local sheriff's department they can tell you where you cannot hunt if that helps. thats how i found some fairly good hunting spots where i live.

First make sure you don't tresspass on private property. Second, to leagally hunt from a boat the law states that "you have to have the boat in standing emergant vegetation such as cattalis and or bullrushes or cane".
I know foating down a river and shooting waterfowl is done alot here in Minnesota and is what your doing is shooting in open water. But it is a grey area that is not enforced to the book.
Ask the DNR or sherriff. Best to ask!
Good Luck!

Finlander, good point, I guess I've been in a gray area for some time. I usally just poke one end in the reeds or what ever, but I have to admit, I have shot while in the middle too.

I think if you're not in a town or area where an ordinance is passed, you can legally hunt on any river or stream. What would be the difference if you hunted a lake where people are fishing??

I am not sure of the full-blown regs.
I did talk to the C.O. in our area and made sure it was Okay, and it was. Just the couple mile stretch where the river flows thru the state park, not to be discharging firearms thru that area.
