Underwrap for eyes?

Recommended Posts

I have yet to do an under wrap. I think for the most part under wraps are going to be a decorative extra and most the rods I build I like to keep the tip end as light as possible.

Using a dab of some sort of glue is used by some to hold the guide in place while wrapping. I use elastic tube cut very thin to hold the guides where I want them while wrapping.

Under wrapping:

+1 upnorth on the fact that it adds extra weight and is unnecessary for most of the rods we use in this region.

It is however used for salt water applications with purpose.

It adds some protection to the blank when using heavy boat and roller guides, but more impotently it adds a bounding surface for the over wrap or wraps. It is not uncommon to see 2 or 3 over wraps in size "D" thread on off shore rods. The wraps are not typically coated with CP and the epoxy is allowed to penetrate to the blank providing a very durable bond.

Thanks for the tips guys! I'm currently building my first rod but the holidays have put a damper on it. I have the handle almost complete, and hope to get eyes on Wednesday or Thursday. In a warm room would the epoxy be cured enough to pull up some trout on Saturday? Heading into the BWCAW for early lake trout! I will also start a thread on my first rod when I get back to it.
