tying guides on an ice rod

Recommended Posts

I'm building my third ice rod right now. TB power noodle. I've struggled with the wraps on the whippy thin end of ice rods, but today I used a thread bobbin for tying flies on the first two guides and it was super easy. Just have to make sure you keep some tension on it.

Just passing on a tip for your rod tip. Happy rod building smile

I agree the first guide on a light action ice rod can be a challenge. You would think that something short with less guides would be a breeze but no to.

I put my end support almost touching the tip top and then loosen the tension on the thread until the wrap is started, then apply a bit more tension. But I would imagine fly tying bobbin would work well too.
