metro early season geese/ public lands

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of any public lands around the twin cities (within 1 1/2 hours) that hold some early season geese? I am looking for places to either pass shoot or places where decoys are effective. I have shells and silhouettes but no place to use them. Once the corn is down I have better luck. Any tips, suggestions, or places for early season geese would be great.

I really don't know about public hunting areas for the early season since water hunting is illegal cept in one zone. If your going to go public then a good bet would be to find a body of water that the geese are using and find where they are feeding as well, and find a good pass in between there. Ive got around 9-10 fields lined up for the upsoming season, 1 winter wheat, 2 beans, and the rest corn. Ill be hunting the wheat come opener for early goose. Another good choice would be to maybe find a field of alfalfa or something like that, maybe wheat or oats. But those are sorta hard to come by
Boy, I sure wish I could find a hot pass, that kinda hunting is so fun!

oh BTW my, what I call my "metro" fields are in Minnetrista, Medina, and Lakeville, I also have many fields up north but who cares right now. I'd be happy to take you along to my metro fields sometime if you have trouble finding a spot. Public Land is getting kinda scarse in these parts

BemidjiDux
thanks for the tips. The trouble I seem to have is finding a public field that the geese are passing through. I've been to carlos and watched flock after flock fly 300 yards on the wrong side of me. I have had some luck pass shooting down by hastings in the gores pool WMA, right off of north lake but I spent more then one morning seeing nothing. I also hunted in bayport quite a bit last year and once again the geese stopped flying right where the public land ended. In the case of bayport the field next to the WMA had a pit blind and a huge set of decoys. I watched many a goose cup the wings and go into that guys decoys.

I may have to take you up on your offer. I live in Apple Valley but I don't think anything of driving a ways to go hunting. Plus I'm always trying to learn something new.

BemidjiDux we'll have to get something set up then. I don't have very many decoys. Just a dozen mag shells, and some homemade silhoutes.

I have tried Louisville swamp in the early season with no luck. Be sure if your going to hunt waterfowl there to get a very detailed map of the area that shows the area you can hunt for waterfowl. The last I knew only the extreme south end of the unit is open to waterfowl hunting. There is a small lake on the south end of the unit near Jordan in which can be hunted during the regular season.
