mallardnwalleye
Well did anyone hunt them. Any reports? Does the dnr have any numbers? What was it like?
booger
I won the opening day hunt, it was unbelievable. Lots of birds flying for most of the morning; we even got a couple flocks at around 10:30, big flocks of woodies. I got blind A, didn't hear a whole ton of shooting from the direction of blind B. There were non-stop shots for at least a half hour. We should've had our limit, it was really tough finding the downed birds. We (3 of us) shot 10 and recovered 6. Lots of rice and lily pads made it difficult to spot them and there was a ton of muck in the lake and that made it hard to even get around. I'm sure we got preference for having a guy over 65 but the conditions made it hard for him to get around. We weren't really blinded in too well either, just kneeling on the bog. The water was really low too, our spot had enough water the other blind looked more shallow. And there isn't actually a blind, just a reserved spot to hunt. In addition to that my semi auto turned into a single shot right away and I was getting pretty PO'ed. Overall we had a blast it was one of the best times I've had hunting and I'll be entering again next year.
otterman91105
I was wondering if anybody hunted those this year. Sounds like they were pretty good.
mallardnwalleye
How did it go for people mid season?I think if the dnr did a mix of well managed reserved and free roam it would utilize the resource better. I wish/hope Carlos Avery could get a consistent crop of thick rice like mud goose up by deer river.

Way overcrowded and lots of skybusting. If they just made the entire area west of 35 a sanctuary and had drawing-only hunts it would probably keep more ducks around and be better overall. Problem then is do people quit hunting or go to other spots that I go to and then everything else becomes overcrowded? I do wonder with more restricted hunting if Carlos Avery could be like LQP. bassmann77
I was lucky enough to draw the weekday hunt on October 9th. We had blind A. The weather was perfect, it was overcast and a little bit of rain. The water was really low and very mucky. We had a nice flock of mallards come in right before shooting time, but left almost right away. We got a few shots at some woodies, but that was it. We must of seen over 200 mallards and geese come from the West and drop in the pools to the South. It was fun and frustrating to see that many ducks and not even get a chance to take a shot.
