GullGuide
Hey all,It's pretty bad when you start thinking about duck hunting in February, but let's hear it...If you could pick one NEW lake to hunt, what would it be?Here are the rules....You can only pick a lake-1) In Minnesota2) Where you have not hunted3) Does not have to be public, could be privateand 4) What species would you be hunting? I guess I would like to try Swan Lake near Mankato. I hear the hunting has not been very good over the last few years, but I would like to hunt it just to say I did. NOW IT'S YOUR TURN!!! ------------------>"////=<Gull Guide Servicefishingminnesota.com/gullguideBrainerd-Mille Lacs-WillmarBemidji-Ottertail
Sartell Angler
I would have to say I'd want to hunt Mud Lake outside of New London because it is Minnesota's waterfowling mecca, I've heard tons of stories about it from people, and i've driven by it while coming back from hunting trips and just looks really cool!! I'd be hunting anything and everything - dabblers to divers. I can't wait 'til duck season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!S.H.
Duck-o-holic
Gull, you took my answer! It's a lake that I can't believe that I haven't hunted yet! (Hmmmm-- sounds like a new area for us to tackle next year!).My second choice would be the Mississippi river backwater around Red Wing for mallards, or Pool #9 for a trophy bull can!Good Gunnin'Duck-o-holic
Guest
Duck-o-holic: I've only lived in Minnesota for three years and now live in Red Wing. Is there supposed to be good greenhead hunting near here? I'm looking for some nearby duckin' action and if you could help, I'd appreciate it. Maybe we could try this area out together sometime. I've usually been hunting on Chub Lake west of Castle Rock, but this last season wasn't very good there. Thanks. Mark
Crappie Kid
I would like to hunt Leech lake for those Bills on a cold November morning. Have heard it can be good. Just never seem to get up there though. Maybe this year. How many days till hunting?

DCICE
The south shore of Lake Johanna in Pope co.I've hunted other parts of the lake but with the no motor laws makes the south shore toofar to reach. Man, for the ducks that pile in there each fall. dc
EW6
Well, since I love to hunt big water, I would like a chance to hunt the biggest waters in the state. First of all Superior would be cool, but because of the laws it is basically impossible to hunt. So a good second choice for me would be Leech Lake when the bluebills are down, Someday I hope.Talk about dream hunts, what if you could have Mud Lake for example, all to yourself for an entire season. Just imagine that! Hey only 9 months away. Eric
GullGuide
EW,What do you mean IF you could have it to yourself? I already do!!...I WISH!!! One question for ya EW, What laws are you refering to that would keep one from hunting Superior? Just want to know...>"////=< ------------------>"////=<Gull Guide Servicefishingminnesota.com/gullguideBrainerd-Mille Lacs-WillmarBemidji-Ottertail
DCICE
Speaking of Mud... I heard that divers will come thru there sometimes, last year even?If the divers don't start coming back, I've got a pile o decoys for sale.dc
GullGuide
There are always some divers on the lake, just hard to get at. Last year had quite a few out there.>"////=<------------------>"////=<Gull Guide Servicefishingminnesota.com/gullguideBrainerd-Mille Lacs-WillmarBemidji-Ottertail
EW6
Gullguide,If I am not mistaken I believe that the shore of lake Superior is considered a refuge or something like that...meaning no hunting from shore. And then there was some reason why it was hard to hunt on the islands, this was all from a Shawn Perich (spelling?) article in Outdoor News that I read. Before that article I had always wondered why no one hunted the big lake, but I guess it is almost impossible to do so legally. On a different note, I am pretty excited, in the next week or so I am going to start volunteering some time out here in Morris at a Wetland Conservation station. Hope to learn a lot about managing wetlands and hopefully will see if I want to study for a career in Wildlife biology. At the very least I should learn a lot of valuable information at building nesting structures and about hunting in general. Enjoy this weather,Eric
Guest
That's what I am going to go to school for..Wildlife Biology. Only one more year of High School then I'm there! I think we all have a problem....already talking about next season in February!!??? I know I have one!!!------------------If I'm not in the duck blind or the ice house I'm thinking about it!!......maybe thats why I can't pay attention in class! mwktrapper
If you time Mud just right in late season, you might just have an incredible bill shoot. My first hunt when I was a little kid was out on Mud, and man did we time it right. Flocks of 30 bills coming in one after the other. It was a sight to see, especially for my first hunt. I'll remember that hunt forever. I try to stay off of this forum in the off-season cause it gets me shiverin for duck season. But I couldn't help it. DCICE
A state Electrical Inspector was telling me as he passed thru my work, about Swan Lake by St.Peter. Sounds like a ducky spot anyone heard of this place????DC
Duck-o-holic
DC--That is the lake that Gull and I are talking about in the first and third posts of this thread. Can't believe that I haven't hunted it before... but I have a hunting partner that does hunt it A LOT! He has a Go-Devil on a V-hulled Jon boat, that gets him back into some areas on Swan that a lot of others can't reach... and he really hammers them! Swan is like mud lake, only A LOT BIGGER!! It has the same history of hunting camps and is also dotted with hunting shacks and cabins along the shore. It is probably the most hunted lake of the state, and holds a lot of birds during season...Maybe you can join Gull and I if we make a trek or two there next year!!!Good Gunnin'Duck-o-holic
