Tip-up/ Rattle Reel Line for northern's

Looking for a little advice here,, Going to reline my tip-ups and rattle reels this year and I'm looking for the best line I can find. I've been using the black nylon 30-50# stuff but there has to be something better. The nylon always gets tangled and freezes to the ice very quickly..Any suggestions? I target mostly large Northern's..

Ha!

Oh boy, well this might sound silly but my best friend (no longer with us) used to spool up with floating fly fishing line on his tip ups.

I watched him haul a lot of 20+ pound northerns to the top of the ice with that line. He never cut his hands, it had good stretch and he was never tangled. It's very forgiving for that whole freezing/tangle thing and stiff ugly frozen re-spools.

I used to make fun of him for using it, but it really did work well.

There are a couple of brands out there that sell the black braided line that is vinyl coated.

I use the 15# test on all of my rattle reels and tip-ups and have no problems with tangles or breaking.

I tie a swivel to the tip-up line then tie on about 4 feet of what ever pound test leader that I want to that. Works great for me.
