Almost got Skunked today...

Recommended Posts

Out in SD doing some pheasant hunting, windy, dry and not finding any roosters.

The dogs are running across a few hens.

Today we were out running for about 4 1/2 hours with no birds in the bag.

We're on our last stretch of property heading into the wind on the way back to the truck.

The field is waist high grass, with the majority of it at knee high.

We get about 50 yards into the field Breeze heads to the left and Trigger heads to the right. All of a sudden Trigger stops and he is about 30' in front of me. I give him the "whoa" and he is pointing but he turns his head and looks at me like "what the h&ll is this".

I walk up to him thinking he has a bird and get about 10' away and see that he is about 4' away from a SKUNK. I lightly give him the "Here" command and he walks over to me and we go around mr SKUNK. WOW that was close, we have another day here and I didn't want to break out the skunk kit.

The good news is that about 10 minutes later when we weaved back over to that side of the field, old Triggs gets his point on again and low and behold we have ourselves a rooster in the bag. NO Skunkola today grin

Its kinda tough out here this year, doing lots of driving. Spots marked on the map, you get there and its mowed down or a planted crop was there....head to next spot. We are seeing lots of hens when we do find spots to hunt, but roosters are tough to see.
