Gas Siphoned: Word of Warning

Recommended Posts

Just thought I'd pass this along to hopefully help someone avoid it. Was grouse hunting just north of Duluth Saturday, parked my truck in a small spot right off the road and headed into the woods.

Came back out a couple hours later and noticed that my gas gauge was reading an almost empty tank (I had filled up earlier that day and had gone only 64 miles). Thought maybe I had a leak, but didn't see anything sign of it on the ground. Found that my gas cap was gone and I immediately knew that my tank had been siphoned. Had I been more than 15 miles from a gas station I may have been in trouble. I actually have a locking gas cap too, but I had removed it a couple days earlier as it tends to freeze up on me when the temps drop.

Lesson learned..Will always use my locking gas cap from here on. I know it's not a guarantee, but it's one more line of defense.

Is this a pretty well known problem? Pretty bold to siphon more than 15 gallons from a truck sitting right off of a pretty busy highway.

At any rate, be aware that it happened to me north of Duluth, in the Hoyt Lakes area. Keep your eyes open.

It does happen. My old roommate walked up on a two gentleman sucking hoses at the tank of his Explorer, although that was in one of the less deluxe neighborhoods of Minneapolis. Locking gas caps are a good deterrent, especially because the gas in your truck is no different than the gas in the next guys...
