14/36 jon boat

Cheers

Recommended Posts

I am thinking about buying a 14/36 jon boat to use as aportage boat with a 9.9 hp . I have never been in a jon boat . Was wondering about the stability and comfort . Also is rivited vs welded an issue on a small boat ? Will be useing the boat for fishing on smaller Canadian lakes that we portage into

a 1436 will only come rivited. the flat bottom makes them very stable but because of this same flat bottom they ride rough in waves. a 9.9hp will push that boat along nicely. my first boat was a 1436 lite with a 5hp. one plus is that you could use the 1436 as a river boat if you were to fish anyplace on the mississippi above the coon rapids dam.

Good choice for smaller protected waters and rivers, portaging, or where there is not good access.

Not good in rough water, and the standard seats are too low for comfort, but a good all around boat for what it was designed for. I have one, and it would be the last boat I would sell.

If you're going to be doing a lot of portaging with it, I would suggest going with the lightest motor you can find. I use a 1 1/2 Johnson on mine - nice and light, self-contained fuel tank, and will push the boat at a good clip with two people in it.
