Sioux Fan Pike Rod

Recommended Posts

FilePhoto0049.jpg

Custum rod built for my brother for an early September Ontario pike trip. The rod was built on a Batson IMB784 blank. The guides are hard aluminum oxide placed on the rod using the new guide concept with 27X and static guide placement. The handle is one of my custom turned eastern red cedar handles with UND logo. It was finished using CA. The closed weave is the 3D Chevron from Billy Vivona's book.

CA its just a short name for super glue. There its a method for applying it while the handle is still on the lathe. It results in a very tough surface and provides excellent protection of the wood.

Chad-

That rod looks great, and I love the way that 3D Chevron looks. A buddy of mine wants this 3D Chevron wrap done on a MHX white blank, in black and blue. I tried to send you a PM to ask these following questions, but your box is full. How many axis' did you do this wrap on? I'm thinking that it's 4, but am not positive on it. Also, looking at Billy's book I'm a little confused. The steps says, "Single Black Cross", White Cross RIGHT, Black Cross LEFT. Then referring to the glossary it says that cross means, "A cross is formed by wrapping a thread Up and Down the blank." However, to me it looks like you only wrap UP the blank, tape it off and not come back down. Am I correct on my assumption?

Another question I had is on the layout. If it is indeed a double wrap on 4 axis', and I have a 40 MM diameter rod. Do I start my cross at 20MM on the 0 and 90 Axis, and 40MM on the 180 and 270 axis?

I did that one last summer and you're right, that was a 4 axis wrap. If I remember right, each cross is created with the two colors. But make sure you understand what LEFT and RIGHT mean, that's the key to a 3D Chevron.

The last part about your question depends on how you want the final result to look after you tie off and start a closing wrap. Do you want to view a full Chevron on top of the rod or half of a Chevron?

I'd have you practice one on a scrap blank to get familiar with how the wrap is created. Do 10-15 passes and see how it shapes up. If you happen to have the Visual Wrap software you can experiment without having to put thread to a blank. It'll let you try different colors too.

Good luck!

Hi Chad,

Just another question on this rod, Do you happen to remember which reel you had used as input in the 27X method for this set-up?

Thanks

One more question for you Chad, Do you cast the rod after set-up and prior to wrapping with thread?

(I missed my window to edit my previous post so I needed to add another post.)

It was a reel that the customer had but I don't remember what it was.

When doing the 27X or any setup for that matter, I test cast with the guides attached to the rods using orthodontic ligature bands. They allow me to move the guides without having to mess with taping/untaping the guides to the blank when fine tuning the guide train.
