Extra Fast or Fast Tip for Avid Spinning Rod?

Recommended Posts

I've narrowed my search for a lindy rig walleye spinning rod down to the St. Croix Avid series 7' medium light, fast action or the 7'6" medium light, extra fast action. Any opinions out there would be appreciated.

I'm set on this rod series because I broke a St. Croix legend and this is the rod they will send me as a replacement.

This rod will be strictly a lindy rig rod, as I have plenty of rods for other applications.

Thanks,

Al

I use a ML-fast tip for all my rigging rods and am very happy with thier performance. I use either Avid's or the Legend Extreme's. In the 7ft range for the length. I also have a few M-fast tipped rods I use for jigging that can also work for the rigging but I refer the ML.

Works for me.

Let me chime in here. I own both actions you are asking about, only in the next line up the scale, the Legend Tournament.

You can't go wrong with either one but if you are going to use it ONLY as a lindy or bobber rod, I'd go with the 7'6" hands down. It may say that is it an XF action but it is not what you are thinking of.

This is the beauty of working with a company like St. Croix that builds many, many species specific rods that they can tweek the action to fit the purpose. This rod has a long perfect action for lindy rigs with enough backbone to handle big fish. The 7' MF is a better all around rod that if I where to want a multi use rod I would go that way.

I take quite a few people out fishing and EVERYONE that has used this rod when rigging has come away very impressed with it and realize how much of an improvement one piece of equipment can make in their fishing.

For what it is worth, the 76MLXF Legent Tournament is my backup/wifes lindy rod. I use one made by a different company that fits my style better.

I have all the rods listed so far and I agree with Eric K. I am a "jig guy" and most of my rods are X-fast. I was given a GLX Loomis rigging rod as a gift. I would NEVER buy something like this but I'm glad its in my rod locker. I don't care for it jigging becasue of the slower tip but I love it for rigging.

I agree with the 7'6" ML XF.

John- not to take over the thread, but I would be interested in knowing what you use. Loomis?

I use a G.Loomis IMX HSR9000. It has a tad faster action but a bit less power than the St. Croix. It fits my style a little better but I will admit I am splitting hairs here. Either rod is great, but for the price of the 7'6" Avid, that is the way to go.
