Question regarding lead core

Looking at setting myself up for lead core. Been doing a lot of reading online and have the basic idea of it down but my question revolves around the lure your pulling. I understand and 1 color=30'=5' down roughly. What I want to know is do you factor in the lures dive rate into the equation. Say your fishing a lure that dives say 5 feet. If you wanted to fish at 15 feet would you let out three colors or just two? May be a simple question but I haven't been able to find an answer. If you do factor in the lure your pulling, how is it effected by your leader lengh, speed etc? Also if anyone knows of any other good write ups on lead core I would love to hear them! Like I said very green to it! Thanks in advance!

Best bet is to either purchase or find someone who will let you borrow thier copy of the precision trolling bible . They can be found on line and is a great source of information regarding all your questions. It also has full size color pictures of alot of the popular sizes and styles of crankbaits for trolling walleye. I got a copy this spring and have learned a ton from it. I too just started playing with lead core this year. Alot of people don't like it but if you don't have the cash to get set up with downriggers it's a great way to go and another way to produce fish.

Here is what most people do. They run a 10' leader so that the dive curve of the lure dosen't really come into play.

Say you have 90' of lead out at 2MPH with no lure. In theory the lead will be 15' down. With a 10' leader the dive curve of just about every lure is nil so the lure will be just a tick more than 15'. With lead, you do NOT take into consideration the amount of lead that you have out, only the leader length.

Some people run a 50' leader, if you chose to do that, use a 50' dive curve and add that to the depth of the lead you have out.
