flipper Posted June 30, 2012 Share Posted June 30, 2012 That is the tassle starting to show when you look down the whorl. It is the male part of pollination. Before long, you will see the beginnings of ears about halfway up the stalk. they will have silks coming out of them. The pollen from the tassles needs to pollinate the silks. Sometimes in the garden, when the time is right, I will cut a tassle off and shake it over the silks on several stalks. I think it helps.
