Muskie rods

Recommended Posts

I'm just starting to get the bug for muskie fishing and am wondering if you "pro's" could help me out.
Here's my question; Do you really need a "muskie" rod with the xtra heavy action or can you get by with a quality heavy action rod?

The reel will be a Abu Garcia Ambasadour (sp?) 5500C3 or a 5000.

Thanks.

I've got an extra-heavy and a medium-heavy rod. I find casting farther works better with the medium-heavy rod. Haven't caught any muskie's on them yet.

I would stay away from the extra heavy, To stiff of a rod can cause you to lose fish, tear the hooks out, on boatside srikes, They can cause slack line when a fish jumps. If you trow realy heavy baits you may need one. I would go with a 7' or longer.

I've looked at a few different makes of muskie specific rods and they look like a broom handle with guides. I can't imagine trying to cast something but maybe it's not so bad. That's why I asked you guys.

Thanks.

I own about 7 rod and they all range in length from 6' to 8' and they are all Med/Hev action and i love them. I fish St. Croix's and G-Loomis, but I've heard good things about Fig Rig Rods. The longer the rod the longer the cast will be and the longer rods are really nice when it comes to doing figure eights at boat side. Hope this helps, have a good weekend and good fishing!

i don't get to do a lot of muskie fishing, so for now i only have two rods. one is a bass ( heavy) flipping stick.( for smaller bucktails etc.) and a muskie rod rated for lures up to 2 1/2 oz. this lets me cover a fair number of lures. del

My fishing partner and I both user Fig Rigs. They are great rods for the money. When it comes to stiffness I think it all depends on what you are comfortable with. I myself love the pool cue style rod (6'2" Extra heavy)I also have a few 7'6" medium/heavy rods that I like for buchtails and smaller cranks. The thing I find the most important in a rod is the weight (lighter the better) 6-8 hour days holding onto a rod gets tiring. Another that you need to watch is the length of the handle. I like my handle long so I can tuck it under my arm for more control.
Hope this Helps a little.

I have 6 muskie rod and reel combination rods rangeing from 6'3" to 7'6" and medium heavy to heavy they all have there places. If I had to pick one it would probably be a 6'6" medium heavy. I use all fenwick rods and berkley IM7's rods they seem to work well for me.

I have 6 muskie rods ranging from 6'2"-7'2". I like them all except my 6'2" Extra Heavy. I could do pull ups on the thing and I don't even think it would flex. But that is my personal opinion, I know guys who love them. I think the most versatile is the Med-Heavy. I use mine all the way up to 3 oz lures. Sometimes a little over the rod rating, but I haven't had any problems yet.

Well, if I had the money I would definetly go with a Throne Bros Diamondback custom rod, these things are the Cream of the Crop, and their price tags reflect that, very spendy.

For me my main 2 rods are a St.Croix Avid Heavy for Jerks and a St.Croix Legend medium heavy for bucktails and smaller baits. I also have a few Rapala Long Cast series Musky rods that are a fairly decent rod for $60, I bought the Rapala when I first started fishing Musky and quickly bought the St.Croix's when I knew there was no turning back. The people that fish with me only use the Rapala's, the St.Croix's are hands off.

i just got my first "musky" rod 2 weeks ago. I was lucky to get it for very cheap considering what it is. I have a 7', heavy G-loomis. I have casted alot of lures in that 2 weeks and it casts like magic. I strongly urge these rods. They are awesome!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
