07 Chev. Impala - strange problem

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

My impala starts fine, but as soon as it starts an goes to idle, my dash lights, radio display, headlights (if dark enough to be on pulsate from dim to bright over and over for about 10-15 seconds. After that period, it usually stops and the car is normal, but sometimes (maybe 1 out of 100 starts)the engine starts to run like it's out-of-time or missing on a cylinder. Almost like it's running out of gas and sputtering. The dash read-out gives me a warning "ENGINE RUNNING AT REDUCED POWER." I then shut it off, and try to start again. Usually it runs fine after the restart but sometimes it happens again. I should also point out that it only seems to happen on cold starts. If the car's been running a while, it starts and idles fine.

I took it to the "experts" at the dealership and all they could do is plug into the computer and tell me there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. They did go through the entire electrical harness/system and said it all checked out. They said they'd have to see it happen to diagnose it which would be almost impossible. I guess I could leave my car there overnight and they could see the pulsing when they start it cold, but the engine thing only happens occasionally--and I'm not even sure the two are related.

I don't have volt meter at home and they did check the battery--but only after the car had been recently running. Could it be that it's just not holding a charge that long and it has a tough time getting all the systems online on a cold start? Could the rough running have to do with the alternator supplying the current for the spark through the dead battery? Obviously I'm not an expert blush

Any advice, opinions, or suggested next steps on a fix would be MUCH appreciated!

thanks!

I would have your battery tested first, then have your charging system tested. To me it sounds like a weak battery, or a bad ground to the engine.

You may have 2 different problems, but I would address the battery and charging system first.

My mother in law has an '08 Impala that had the same problem. I don't recall the exact fix but it had something to do with the foot pedal and maybe a sensor.

She was getting the reduced power message that you are also.

I agree. I would hook up a volt meter before starting it cold and see if the voltage is fluctuating. A weak battery can cause this and sometimes result in reduced power mode because of the varying voltage at various sensors.

Do or did you have a check engine light at any time so that a code can be retrieved?

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
