Tipping on a charter boat

What is the standard tipping for a charter trip. I know it depends on several things, just say we catch are limit of fish and they work hard at it and they make it fun. Do you just pull a dollar amount out the air or a percentage of the trip. Give the tip to the captain and he will split it with his first mate. Thank You. gilby

we did a nighttime walleye thing off eddys twice last summer...first time we were chased off after only 2 hours because of approaching storm, everyone was jumping off boat & running to vehicles b4 downpour & no fish caught, no tip that night

wife booked again cause she wanted another try, she caught 2 18 & 22" & at time 18 was a legal keeper, she was so happy she tipped the captain $20 for taking off the hook both times & cleaning her keeper. probably a 30% ish tip, dont remember, we have really never worried bout %'s, if we have a great time anywhere we always over tip & minimum 10% for a crappy time

......but tipping is a very personal opinionated realm, i worked in restaurant biz in chicago, always overtipped everywhere but was also always treate like royalty when doing so....ppl do remember the GOOD tippers and if you like a service and think you will return, I promise you they will remember u

I always tip 15 - 20%. I have never had a trip that was not worth that amount. If you do not catch fish, it is usually beyond the captain or mates power unless they do not try. They want you to catch fish so you come back and tell your friends. I have never been on a charter or headboat where the captain and mate did not try very hard to find fish. If you need to come in early due to weather or mechanical failure, the captain should make it right with a discount or refund. Tip the mate accordingly. Mates generally make no money (or very little) besides the tip that you give them.

A starting point on LOW is $10 per person/per day if the guide does a good job. There are no first mates on those boats. If the guide shows you a great time and you really liked him etc, it goes up from there.

10-25% of what you have invested in the trip/service. JUST LIKE ANY OTHER SERVICE RELATED INDUSTRY. You're gonna have bad experiences and good experiences. "Don't screw the waitress because the steak was over cooked" ;-)
