Fishing in Sturgeon Lake (Sturgeon, Island & Sand)

JNets

Recommended Posts

We will be spending a lot of time this summer in this area. The three closest lakes to us are Sturgeon lake, Island Lake and Sand Lake. Any tips, pros/cons, info or any ideas on which lake is better for Walleye fishing? We also do waterskiing and stuff like that so info the lake that would be better for that would be greatly appreciated. I have already checked the DNR Lake finder HSOforum. Thanks!

It's been a few years since, but I grew up on Sand Lake and fished it a bunch. Unfortunately many years ago someone brought milfoil to it. It had decent walleyes then including some big girls. A 16# was netted there by DNR many years ago, and we've caught up to 13#. But I have no recent info for you. We fish Island a couple times a year for muskie, so no help on the eyes there, but my buddy does quite well the first several weekends on Sturgeon, though not sure where. Last couple years we have gone over to Mille Lacs or up to St Louis river. Hopefully you get into em a bit though.

Past few summers I spent quite a lot of time up there, will be spending less this summer unfortunately.

Island isn't anything to write home about, except that I've found it pretty canoe friendly and non-busy. Never seen a musky there, but I've targeted them many times. I have caught pike (all under 27 inches) and LMB (all under 4lbs) on every trip out, but never in high numbers. A fish an hour is probably what I average.

I think if I put in an extra 10 minutes drive time, some of the other lakes in the area might give me a small gem or two.

Yeah I have gotten lost heading back in after dark. I try to find the lights from the house next to the landing. I think the campground has a light up high on a pole if I remember correctly as well. The landing is right between the two.
