1976 Evinrude 2 HP--Working on starter rope/pulley/recoil?

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 1976 Evinrude 2 HP outboard. It runs well, but the starter rope is catching, and does not always recoil right away.

Loosening up the bolt on the top of the motor cover helped with the recoil issue, but it still sometimes sticks. I'm told the pawl is probably worn and not engaging with the flywheel, thus causing the problem.

As this is a new motor to me I do not want to start taking it apart before I have a good idea of what to look for an do. I am looking for a manual, but until I find one is there anyone who can give me a good idea of what I need to do? Diagrams or pictures/video would be an especially big help.

Here is the parts breakdown.

Im guessing you will find dry and dirty parts in there. All parts need to be clean and free of gunk. Some parts like 8&9 need to have a light film of lithium type grease for drag.

Thanks for the info! smile

Unfortunately, when I checked the quality of the lube in the lower unit last night, it looked and felt like more water than petroleum-based product. mad

I could have handled the starter assembly myself, but re-sealing a lower unit is beyond me. Looks like I'll be pumping a little money in to the local outboard repair economy.

That's what I would do, but I cuss and swear at recoils (auger, backup auger, outboard, lawnmower just today!). I keep thinking that I will get it one day, but if you've never seen a recoil replaced, and/or performed successfully multiple times, don't even try. There's nothing more frustrating than that coil blowing up in your face!
