Cheap hourmeters

low277

Question

Has anyone put one of the cheap rectangular self powered hour meters / tachometers on a 3 - 4 cylinder outboard? I have one for my small generator, you just mount the unit and wrap the pickup wire around the spark plug wire.

I wasn't sure if they would read correctly on multi-cylinder engines.

Thanks

I know there are some that you can change a few settings in such as the Tiny Tach. Some outboards may not read the correct RPM's due to the firing order of the plugs and/or how often they fire.

I just picked up one made by Hardline and will be throwing it on my Yamaha 25 4 stroke.

A few years ago I had a dealer put an hour meter in one of the blank gage holes in the dash. It works well, I am not sure where it is wired in to but it is so NOISY!!! When you are trolling it drives most of my fishing partners crazy, Its mine so I have to put up with it.
