IS MY GRASS DEAD?

Im thinking my grass is dead and may need to be reseeded. There are spots that are green but about 75% of it is still looking dead! I have about 2 acres of grass and i would hate to till it up. How do i know for sure if its dead or still dormant, it really suffered last year with the lack of rain we got. Also i have very poor soil and would prolly top soil it with better soil just wondering how you guys would spread it evenly on a yard this size? Any advice would be great! thanks

If it's gray, almost white in color, that would be dead.

If it's tan in color, that's still dormant.

Did you just seed it last year? If so, it's possible you seeded it with annual grasses. Often those "fast grass" or "quick patch" products have annual grasses. I unknowingly made the mistake of using an annual product once--if that's what happened, make sure you patch with a perennial this time!

I would give some thought to putting at least an acre of it into wildflowers and native grasses. But I'm getting lazy in my old age. It could solve a couple of your problems.
