I grew up fishing in a 14 foot boat with a 9.9 horse. I think I was about 11 when my dad let me go out solo on the small lake our cabin was one then. Those were the days, I had more fun finally being able to go out when I wanted, fish like a kid, and just learn by trial and error.
My son is 13 and he's pretty much only fished with me in our big boat. We also have a 16 foot lund fishing boat (SSV 16, no live well, just seats going across from gun well to gun well)with a 25 hp electric start with transom trolling motor. He wants to do some fishing without dad this year and I was wondering if anyone has some good or unique ideas on how to rig it up. Obviously it's good enough "as is" but wanted to make a fun project for both of us.
It has a few pieces of plywood cut up front to make the floor flat and we use a couple sand bags to keep the bow down when in the boat solo.
We were going to build a live well with a cooler and aerator/pump together and I like to keep a spare battery in it all the time. We'd need a kid friendly depth finder of some sort.
Our place is on a 2000 acre lake and we primarily fish walleyes and perch. Spring fishing is fishing shoreline drop offs and Summer is mid lake smallish humps and rocks.
With the info above anyone have any thoughts on putting a kids boat together. I'm hoping he'll guide me from time to time and I can keep my mouth shut and not tell him what to do.
I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought.
Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just
buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
Congrats on the motor! I think you’ll like it.
I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers. 160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.
Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor. Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to
get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius)
says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe. I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho. Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
