New Dog Advice

We have a new 3 year old GSP and have discovered she LOVES sleeping with the 10 year old. The problem is the 10 year old sometimes (last night) doesn't want to sleep with her.

Here is the problem. When she shut her door to go to bed Lacy stood outside and wimpered NON STOP. Eventually she just opened her door and let her in. The wimpering went on for an hour. Lacy obviously has an attachment to my daughter.

How do we fix or correct this??

Thanks!!

Granted she is in a new environment, she still needs structure. I would suggest getting a dog pillow for her and training her to sleep in a certain spot. Whether that be in your daughters room on the floor(pillow) or in the living room or where ever. Use a treat to reward her for laying on it, but when training you have to be consistent.

I let our short hair sleep on the bed with us for a year as a pup. He got too big and too much of a bed hog, so we got one of those dog pillows with the back pad on it and put it on the floor in the bed room. We give him a treat when he lays down on it, and then reinforce it if he tried to jump on the bed. It took a few days before he wouldn't try to jump on the bed. But the biggest thing was that he really liked the pillow...it is a memory foam one from sams club. We have one in the living room down stairs too and he doesnt even try to lay on the bed anymore.

She needs to know what your house rules are and obey them. Be calm and assertive and consistent with the command you use to tell her to lay on her pillow ("Bed", "Sleep","kennel") what ever you use, stick with it so she learns and associates it with the pillow and treat her when she goes to it and lays down. She'll pick it up pretty quick.full-17729-18641-20120315_075142.jpg
