A little help for a newcomer?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I moved to the area over the winter and with the weather warming up to the 70's this week, I was wondering if anyone had any helpful suggestions as to where to head, or if its still too early? I moved from Florida, so I'm not really used to not being able to fish year round, lol. I don't have a boat yet, so wondering if there are any good streams or rivers or shore fishing around? I live in Spencer, and I know there's the Little Sioux that runs through here. I'd love to start fly fishing, but have the usual spinners and such of course. So. Good place to start?

Soiux is mainly walleye and cats, big lakes in the Okoboji area hold alot of species, walleye season on the big lakes open first Saturday in may but all other waters are open year round....We fish year round here to just have to drill holes in the ice....

Welcome up here! If you haven't already, pick up a copy of the Regs and get to know it well. Talk to a local bait shop and they should be able to point you in good direction. Make some friends with other people you come across while out fishing. Just my advice, it has helped me and I've gotten to know some great people.

I live in Minnesota but my wife is from Spencer so I get down there quite often to visit the in-laws. I haven't fished there much but I know that there is some nice fishing to be had. I've seen some guys pulling some decent walleye's out of the little Sioux and of course the Okobojis East and West and Spirit are good. Lost Island lake can produce a nice walleye bite too. I can't remember the name of the lake but there is one not too far from Spencer that has some nice jumbo perch also. I've only ice fished that one with the brother in law so can't tell you about open water sorry. wink
