Line counter reel?

Hi all,

I had been hijacking someone else's post about trolling set ups by asking questions so I figured I should just ask on a separate thread.

I am thinking it would be a good idea to get a line counter reel for trolling and rod to pair it with. I have 5 other muskie combos that can cast everything from DCGs to gliders but I am without a good trolling combo. I just use one of my heavy casting combos to troll and it sounds like I am losing fish because they are too stiff.

I have a pretty good idea on what rod to buy but I'm looking for input on a line counter reel. I do not use rod holders when trolling because I like being able to pump the bait and feel the strike. Any advice?

Yeah - A Shimano Tekota. Great reel, reliable, incredibly smooth drag, but price wise really pretty reasonable considering what you get in quality, especially when you figure you'll have it for years.

If you want to get something cheaper, the Okumas aren't bad. If you watch for them to go one sale you can get one for really cheap. They don't last forever, but they're decent.

Know lots of guys that use Daiwas, but I haven't in years so no idea what they're offering these days.

But really...Tekotas are where I'd look.

I run 2 Tekota's and they're the best I've found. I have a Diawa 27 and it's mediocre at best. I also have an Abu 7000lc which is the only reel from them that I'd recommend.
