anal gland problem

Ive been fighting an anal gland problem with my lab for over a year now. It started with both glands bursting out the back end and now i cant seem to get that hole to heal. The gland itself seems fine and drains on it own now but the hole out the back has formed a fiscula(vet term), and wont heal unless i keep her on very expensive meds. The meds are called Atopica and works good but i cant take her off of them or it comes back. They cost $120 for a 2 week supply.

Anyone had a similar problem that would have some advice or alternative?

I have used tacrolimus during the beginning and it did a good job of healing it but then it would explode open again. Now that i think of it, i think when i used that was when her gland was still draining out of the hole and that was the reason it would burst open again. Might be worth a try again now the the gland is draining properly. Thank you

We have a bulldog that had both of her anal glands plug up and need to get popped open and drained. It took time to heal but they did heal. Our vet recommended putting her on a lamb and rice food to make her [PoorWordUsage] naturally release the glands when she goes. We put her on Iams L&R and haven't had a reoccurance. Not sure if it would help but may be worth a try
