Humbling experiences...

Back before the geese moved into the metro area I hunted Talcot Lake near Windom. The hunting was good, but mostly early and late day action, so you are 100 miles from home with nothing to do during the mid day. I started taking fishing gear along to fill the void. There was a river connected to the southeast side of the lake. I had seen a few fishermen there so I gave it a try. There were two old duffers sitting on pails with old bait casting reels and black line. I had ultralights with lindy rigs and small jigs. I baited with leeches or fatheads. Could not catch anything but bullheads. I notced these two old duffers would pull in a 18 to 20 inch walley about every 20 minutes. They were using 6 inch sucker minnows. Sometimes old school is still the best.

I stoped at the dam in pilligar MN one morning on the way through and got all my "expensive" gear out There was a local guy sitting there on the shore with me catching walleye after walleye, after he watched me change my lure about 20 times cause I coudl not catch anything he looked at me and said "I paid $14 for this outfit" and smiled as he reeled in another eye.

This sounds alot like my uncle who lived just up the road from the dam in Pillager. He could out fish anybody with a hand cut willow branch, a shoe lace, and a hunk of dirt on a plain hook. Ok maybe that was a little over the top, but he could catch more fish than anybody by just keeping it simple.
