Plumbing

In regards to what? Price?

Don't do "ballparks" when it comes to plumbers. Have him come look at your project/plans, then give you a solid bid. Ballparks tend to cost the homeowner lots of money at $65 an hour.

Ask him if he is a licensed plumber. Get some referrals. Check up on those referrals. Get a set price on the job in writing. If he doesnt have enough experience to give you a set price he doesnt have much experience. If your plumber shows up in a unmarked beat up truck and he is dressed about the same dont expect your work to look much better. You call always call your local plumbing inspector to see if he knows the plumber.

Its funny that you mention $65 dollars a hour. Think that was about the going rate in the 80's but I still run into guys that charge that. The last T&M shop I worked for charged $100 a hour and that was in 98. To off set his low hourly rate materials where marked up a minimum of 300%. Yep. $5 for a copper fitting. $35 for a 3" PVC y and that was over 20 years ago. The company is still one of the biggest service shops around and doing very well.

If you do go T&M make sure and get a price on the material to. Most guys get a hourly rate but never check material rates. Tell him you want to know what percentage mark up to expect and then to see the material invoices. Or just get a set price from plumbers and com pair them.
