Holes for Heroes - Medicine Lake

Recommended Posts

Planning on heading out to this tourney on Saturday. Anybody fished this event in the past?

Wondering if you can go early to find a spot and set up or do they let everyone out all at once? Can you rip your own holes or do they do it?

Tip ups allowed?

Tried to find info online, no luck. Any info on the tourney would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hey guys. Thanks for your interest in the event. Should be a good time. I'll be out there drilling holes, probably guiding for some kids or folks new to ice fishing, and maybe giving rides with the ATV. I guess there's enough ice to drive trucks on, as I saw on Hardy's webcam today that there were plenty out, but I believe we're encouraging folks to walk their gear on as the weather hasn't been the greatest as of late.

This site has the info. If you click on the PDF file listed under the 'Rules, Parking & Last Minute Announcements' link it should answer the majority of your questions. Hope to see you out there, and good luck.

Hey amateurfishing,

Don't worry about being new. This is a very family-friendly tournament, and I'm sure there will be lots of folks like you out there. If you haven't got gear, I don't think it will be a big deal. Holes will be drilled for you, rods can be provided, and we'll put you on fish. I'll be bringing my sonar with me and hopefully will be able to move around to beginners and show them what it's like to fish with one and such. The most expensive the tournament will be for you is $10 if you choose to register the day of, and that has got to be the cheapest entry fee into a tournament I've ever seen. It should be a great way to check out ice fishing and hopefully catch the bug that so many of us have. Hope to see you out there.

Thx Ryan, I have gear, just suck at it as im kinda teaching myself vicariuosly thru this HSOforum. Should i bring auger also or best kept leaving that at home & just bring portable? also anything for 7 year old son to too there? i have taken him fishing twice but can get bored fast if they arent biting. what is recommended arrival time? is parking a big hassle? will have trailer with portable on it.

There will be a lot for kids to do. There will be a little play area for them and what not, along with concessions and some other stuff. There will be a lot going on other than fishing.

To be honest, I wasn't at it last year, so I'm not completely sure how it will all work, but if you don't want the hassle and weight of the auger I know I'll be drilling holes and I believe some more guys will be out drilling too. Just track me down and I'll drill you some if you need. I'll be on my black Grizzly ATV wearing tan Carhartt bibs and jacket with a beard. It starts at noon, but I'd say get there at least a half-hour before that as it may take some time to register and park and what not. However, with the little one standing around and waiting for it to start for too long may be a hassle as well. I guess I can't be a whole lot of help for now as I'm not completely sure how it will all be organized. All I know is I'm getting there around 9:30 to set up and get ready and what not. You may want to try contacting Tom, who is the man in charge of the deal. His contact can be found on the Fishing For Life site. Hope to see you out there.

I personally had a great time, i thought there was lot of ppl, but my first tourney ever so really dont know, if tag number id is any indication though, ppl with #'s of 440ish were winning prizes.

Got to meet the Diesel and some other very nice ppl. (BTW) Where every u are Chuck (not an HSO member), thank you so very much again for inviting me to your families hot hole & helping me have a great time.

Chuck and i were there bout 10:30 & set up in 25 foot hole area bout 20 yards apart. we marked fish when we got there but by 11"30 they dissappeared. anyway after 2 hours of zero bites & zero marks he just started drilling bunch of holes round his portable, 8 or 10 i think. next thing ya know within 10 feet of his portabale he says he's marken em like crazy, drops a pole and has a nice crappie within 1 minute. then he starts pullin up crappie after crappie, calls me over and says cmon join the fun. i told him thx but no thx, did not want to intrude on his family time & fun,& he said cmon, join us & have some fun, plenty to go round, so i did. caught small perch and large crappie with his family (bout 11 inches i think) that sadly slipped off hook ritht after i pulled it out of hole and down it went. all i know is fish was twice size of my hand when i tried to reach in hole after it. could have been winning tourn crappie but will never know. he still made my day. was a very nice outing with great people, lot of families out there with awesome sponors like army, frabill, cabelas, strikemaster, clam corp. etc. and was fun getting on a different lake. totally worth the 5 bucks with coupons received in gift bag alone. definetely need to do more of these events, especially for such great causes.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
